My Background
I've been teaching since my freshman year at Columbia. And from day one, I've viewed my complete lack of training (and hands-on approach) as one of my biggest advantages.
The Start: One day during my freshman year, a friend of mine who knew that I got a high SAT score asked me if I'd fill in for him and tutor one of his students. When I heard he made $25/hour, I jumped at the opportunity.
I had no idea what I was doing. But, rather than fudging it, or relying on another firm's curriculum, I was completely honest with my student. I let him know I didn't know all the answers, or how to teach them, and so we searched for them together. As a result, he trusted me, became more independent, and ended up with incredible results. The efficacy of this honest, student-empowered approach has accidentally become the cornerstone of my entire methodology.
For the next two years, I posted flyers on bus stops, left my business card on the table at local bank branches, and got plenty of word of mouth. My schedule was booked with students looking to raise their scores. And thanks to relentless testing, my methods were quickly becoming more and more effective. I had a thought: if I can teach this way, I can probably teach others to do it, too!
The start of my tutoring firm: My Junior year at Columbia, after taking some courses at Columbia Business School, I decided to launch my own tutoring firm. Metropolitan Tutors, later renamed to My Ivy Leaguer, was born. From 2008 through 2010, I hired and trained over 150 tutors to help students all over New York City to train for their SATs and ACTs. My time was split between crafting curriculum, training my tutors, helping my clients, and working with my own 1-on-1 clients to retain and improve my own SAT and ACT tutoring skills. However, after nearly three years of running My Ivy Leaguer, I came to a sudden realization: the one thing I truly loved about my job was tutoring the SAT 1-on-1. It's what I enjoyed most, and what I was best at. I sold the firm to a competing tutoring company and re-launched my private practice.
The re-launch of my private practice: In early 2011, I re-launched my own private practice. Over the next year, I dedicated myself to doing nothing but tutoring 1-on-1, working with nearly 80 students that year. When I wasn't tutoring, I was spending all my time refining my curriculum, my strategies, and my tactics, using each student to observe the effects of my methods and improve them further. That year, my average student score improvement rose from ~290 points to over 350 points.
Over the next few years, I gained a reputation as the most effective SAT and ACT tutor in the world. By continually testing my methods, working with hundreds of students, and obsessively trying to improve both the lessons I taught and the ways that I taught them, I hit an average student SAT score improvement of over 425 points and an ACT score improvement of over 7 points - results unheard of in my industry. My rate skyrocketed to $1,000/hour, and I was covered by outlets ranging from Business Insider and the Washington Post to CNN and FOX Business.
I was thrilled with my results, but there was one problem: my methods were limited to the few people I had the time to tutor 1-on-1, exclusively the wealthiest families on Earth. However, in 2013, I finally found a way to give more "scale" to my knowledge and methods.
The Launch of Green Test Prep. In 2013, I turned my tutoring methodologies into an online SAT and ACT program that mirrors my curriculum and methods. In the three+ years since its launch, tens of thousands of students have used my methods to improve their scores by entire college tiers, and the program has consistently outperformed the countless other online programs and classroom courses on the market.
Better yet, Green Test Prep has given me the ability to improve my methodology at an even more accelerated pace. Now that I can test and improve my methods with thousands of students, rather than ~40 a year, my one-on-one results have skyrocketed even further.
Onward and Upward: Thanks to the amazing word of mouth generated by Green Test Prep, I've been able to install an amazing team of customer service reps, programmers, and support staff to keep it up and running without my involvement. All I get to do? Keep testing my methods, experimenting, and improving. Even though I have a higher average student score improvement than any tutor alive, and even though my program is trouncing the competition, I'm not satisfied. I got my results by continually improving, and that's what I plan to keep on doing! I'm spending my time between the software and my one-on-one students, and studying the most cutting-edge neuroscience, teaching, and educational developments available so that I can keep improving the program and my instruction on a daily basis.
